Modern Motion Graphic Design

One of the terrific things about the rapid rise of technology, besides the obvious – the improvements in convenience and quality – is just watching it all happen. Every day there is something new on the market. And there is always a long list of things – amazing things - that will be coming soon.

Technology has been improving in recent years at a much more rapid rate than it did in the past. There are constantly bigger and better, faster and simpler ways to do very complex things. Over the span of my life I have seen so many amazing discoveries and watched things that used to be the top of the line, brand new unbelievable technology become something that the younger generation just giggles about.

One area where the changes in technology are very apparent is in the field of motion graphic design. Thirty years ago the motion design that you saw on the opening for television shows or movies was cutting edge. It caused people to wonder how such a thing could be accomplished.

These days, we look back on those very same shows and snicker over how hokey and cheap it looks. Did we really ever think that looked nice? We wonder. But we did! There's no question about it. However, in our day the advances in motion graphic design are so extreme that its like comparing cave drawings to the Mona Lisa.

The reason the quality of motion graphic design has improved so dramatically in recent years is largely because of the computer programs that are used in creating the images. These have become extremely powerful and are also readily available.

In graphic design animation, the graphic designer must incorporate new elements into the trade, besides creating an image. He also must work with sound, time and space to bring the images to life. This requires a different kind of training on top of the training of a traditional graphic designer. Some motion designers come from backgrounds in film or animation.

Because of the need to deal in space and time, producing a motion graphic requires a great deal of knowledge. It takes a lot of work to understand about positioning and lighting, layering and blending as well as being able to coordinate everything into a certain time frame.

In order to be a good motion graphic designer, you must understand a number of different sciences. Mathematics and physics both come into play when putting together a motion graphic, and it is a complex process.

The images produced in modern day motion graphic design are often so realistic that we can almost mistake it for video footage. Comparing that to what we were viewing a few decades ago really does show the amazing improvements in graphic design animation.
