Becoming A Graphic Designer

Once you have completed your studies, or even while you are studying, find an internship in the design department of a nearby company. This makes for a good addition to resume and will also get you contacts for possible future employment.

Freelancing is a great way to build up a portfolio. Do a variety of small and large jobs so that you will have some experience behind you and some work to show when you are applying for positions in the future.

Of course, you should also be aware of trends in graphic design that is printed around you. Take note of what kinds of style and techniques are being used. Get an idea of different ways that you can use the methods you have learned and use them in your freelancing.

If you do all of these things, when you finish your schooling you will have, not only a solid base of knowledge based on your studies, but a lot of experience, as well. Your experience in freelancing will help you learn to work with various employers and their different ideas, and an internship will help you understand what goes into a full time position with a single company. Both of these experiences will give you possible contacts.

Now that you have the background necessary, you must be prepared to do all that is in a graphic design job description. You will be required to brainstorm and come up with ideas for your design. You will present your design to the client and then make adjustments suggested by the client. Then you will set a budget and schedule to follow for your work. You need to be prepared to work using computer software, and you also need to work well with others involved in the design department to produce a finished product.
